ROOT BEER BAKED BEANS
(part of my Soda Series: Simple, Scrumptious recipes)
Root Beer Baked Beans Ingredients:4 slices of crispy cooked bacon
1/2 onion (finely minced)
2 (16 oz.) cans Pork & Beans (I use the kind with molasses and brown sugar)
1/4 cup BBQ sauce
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (or 1/2 t dry mustard)
1/8 t hot sauce (optional) I do not use.
1/2 cup root beer (Do NOT use diet.)
Stir together well.
Bake uncovered in a 400 degree oven for 55 minutes.
The sauce will be thicker and bubbly.
Here's an INTERESTING fact. In the late 1800s, root beer was made using 12 to 16 essential oils, although today's commercial version uses only 7 to 8, including cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, lemon, cassia oils, vanilla, and oil of wintergreen.
Barq's root beer DOES have caffeine added, which gives it a bite, or makes it seem spicier than the others.
(Other, more obscure brands of root beer that contain caffeine are:
Hosmer Mountain Sasparilla
Hot Rod Magazine Root Beer
Skeleteen's Rat Bastard Root Beer
Jack Black's Dead Red Root Beer (Yes, these are real, haha):
For those of you who crave the old Dog N Suds Root Beer, you can order it from this sight. http://www.beveragesdirect.com/Root-Beer.aspx
So, if you're out, filling your cup at a soda fountain, just remember "Barq's = Buzz." (The rest have zero caffeine.)
